Actor and producer Maureen Joyce McKenna is the heart of Adobe Rose Theatre, which presented its first production Luna Gale by Rebecca Gilman in January at its Parkway Drive location. McKenna had years of live theater experience and commercial work behind her before starting her own theater company. McKenna’s husband, award-winning screenwriter and producer Bruce McKenna, serves as Adobe Rose Theatre’s president of the board of directors.
Since launching her first show at the beginning of the year, McKenna has presented a combination of 12 in-house and visiting productions at Adobe Rose Theatre. “I’m interested in offering a balance of different kinds of plays, although I look for those with social relevance,” she explains. “Sometimes we just need to go to the theater to laugh.”
Laughter is the key ingredient in Adobe Rose Theatre’s latest show Winning the Future by the Up & Down Theatre Company. Presented Thursday through Sunday through November 6, the satirical musical cabaret takes a humorous look at current political, economic and social circumstances. Kate Chavez, Lindsey Hope Pearlman and Robin Holloway star in the show.
The theater’s mission goes beyond the presentation of classical and contemporary plays. McKenna is keenly interested in giving actors and playwrights a chance to hone existing skills and learn new ones.
Adobe Rose also presents an array of educational opportunities for the larger community. Saturday Open Improv is a 90-minute morning drop-in class featuring improvisation exercises, warm-ups and theater games for amateurs and professionals. This Saturday class has been led by Melissa Chambers and Malcom Jamar Morgan since the summer.
Sundays @ 7 started on October 9 as a program designed to help artists, writers and directors develop their craft. Led by award-winning actor and director Staci Robbins, the program introduces new works through staged readings and offers a variety of writing and acting workshops.
Check out the theater’s website for more information about these and other educational opportunities as well as upcoming productions.
