Last fall, artist Jamie Chase sent Facebook messages to some of the country’s top graphic novel artists, inviting them to submit original work for an exhibit at City of Mud. To his surprise and delight, they responded enthusiastically.
“I initially asked for three commercial and three personal pieces and was amazed when I received so much more,” recalls Chase, who is the curator for City of Mud’s show ‘Illustrated!’
“Bill Sienkiewicz sent 40 drawings, and George Pratt sent 40 pieces-oils, monotypes and drawings.”
“Illustrated!” features drawings, paintings and monoprints by Scott Hampton (Dark Knight, Spookhouse), Bruce Jones (Batman, Alien Worlds), Andy Kuhn (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Firebreather) and William Wray (Ren & Stimpy) as well as Sienkiewicz (New Mutants, Elektra: Assassin), Pratt (Dark Knight) and Chase.
“City of Mud Gallery is honored to feature so many illustration luminaries in one exhibition, a first of its kind for Santa Fe,” explains Chase. “These artists are the top in their field, and their ample skills will be on display from incidental sketches to graphic novel pages to finished paintings.”
Hampton, Pratt and Kuhn plan to be at the opening, which takes place on April 7. The gallery is setting up a reading area within the exhibit that’s filled with the artists’ books. To add to the festivities, City of Mud is hosting a costume contest, with prizes of prints and books for the most creative costumes.
