Brenda Lynn Bynum and James Jenner, co-founders of the New York-based The Oasis Theatre Company, have wanted to present plays in Santa Fe for many years. By connecting with Adobe Rose Theatre, they’re making their dream come true.
“Marriage by the Masters,” an evening of three classic one-act plays, is The Oasis Theatre Company’s first foray into the Santa Fe theater scene. Opening on July 13 and running through July 30 at the Adobe Rose Theater, “Marriage by the Masters” is a presentation of George Bernard Shaw’s “How He Lied to Her Husband,” Anton Chekhov’s “A Marriage Proposal” and Molière’s “The Forced Marriage” starring Jenner and a cast of Santa Fe actors.
“We did these plays together in New York about 10 or 15 years ago,” explains Bynum. “One of the things we like about this production is that actors gets to play two or three characters in every play and really stretch themselves.”
“How He Lied to Her Husband” is about a married, aristocratic woman named Aurora who’s having an affair with an attractive younger man. When she loses love poems he has addressed to her, she becomes fearful that her husband will find them.
In “The Marriage Proposal,” Chekhov shows how complicated a potential marriage agreement can be when property, love and romance are involved.
“The Forced Marriage” is a tale of a money-minded bride-to-be. “It’s almost like a circus,” says Jenner. “Characters come in and out in what’s a wild adventure.”
The Oasis Theater Company is transforming Adobe Rose Theatre’s space into an amphitheater and setting up the seats in a way that the Santa Fe theater company hasn’t done before. “The Adobe Rose’s space is beautiful and similar in set-up to ours in New York,” says Jenner. “It has a really comfortable quality to it.”
