The Santa Fe Film and Digital Media Commission launched a new project, the Emerging Media Alliance, several months ago after commissioners decided that Santa Fe’s digital media community could use a boost of support.
“Everybody who attended a series of summer and fall meetings feels a sense of possibility of the flourishing of media arts in Santa Fe,” explains Chris Jonas, a commissioner with the Santa Fe Film and Digital Media Commission and the executive director of Littleglobe, an organization that is committed to interdisciplinary, collaborative art projects that foster life-affirming connections across the boundaries that divide us. “We have enough talent and energy in town to form our own community.”
The Emerging Media Alliance’s mission is to galvanize and amplify the rich and diverse community already dedicated to media arts, which is an artistic expression that utilizes a variety of tools including virtual reality, social media video, interactive storytelling, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and 3D printers.
Some of the Emerging Media Alliance’s members are Currents New Media, Meow Wolf, Littleglobe, SITE Santa Fe, the Thoma Foundation, the Institute of American Indian Arts, Decartes Labs and the Santa Fe Institute.
Jonas, who describes Santa Fe’s arts scene as a constant conversation between traditional and emerging arts, is excited about the exchange of ideas that already have taken place between artists and scientists working in the media arts and will take place in the future.
During the month of June, which has been declared Emerging Media Month, there are a number of media arts events taking place in town.
The Currents New Media 2018 festival runs from June 8 through 24, while the InterPlanetary Festival, which is spearheaded by the Santa Fe Institute and brings space enthusiasts together for a two-day celebration, is held June 7 and 8 at venues around town.
The Thoma Foundation presents “TRANSFER Download,” an exhibit that opens on June 15 and features new digital art by 15 international artists showcased in an interactive display chamber called a hyperspace.
The Emerging Media Alliance hosts a launch party on June 14 with what it calls an “un-conference” and dance party.
