In honor of International Women’s Voices Day, Blue Raven Theatre presents its second annual “Fearless Female Voices.”
This one-day play festival on January 27 features work by 10 women playwrights living in Santa Fe.
“Female playwrights don’t get much of a chance to get their plays produced,” explains Blue Raven’s founder and artistic director Talia Pura, who is an actor and playwright. “So few of them have gotten a chance to shine in the past 100 years.”
In the spirit of inclusivity, Pura put out a call to all women playwrights in Santa Fe for this non-juried event. “I’m happy to say that I am able to include everyone who wants to be part of it,” adds Pura. “Only two of the women who presented works last year are participating in the festival. The rest are new.”
Pura asked each playwright for either a scene or a complete play that’s up to 15 minutes in length. She’s providing a simple set that everyone is free to use. Playwrights cast their own works.
“I haven’t read the plays and will be as surprised as everyone else when I see them for the first time during our dress rehearsal,” says Pura. “But we’ve got some wonderful playwrights in this year’s show.”
Among the playwrights showcasing work are Dale Dunn, Kita Mehaffy, Lisa Foster, Rosemary Zibart and Leslie Harrell Dillen.
As far as Pura goes, she’s choosing to present a scene from a new play she’s been writing this year.
