Trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra play blues and jazz standards at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on March 1 as guests of Performance Santa Fe.
The brother of jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis has made a name for himself in the jazz world. He’s an active musician, composer and producer. In 2011, he received the Jazz Master Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Marsalis founded the Uptown Jazz Orchestra in 2008 with the intent of keeping jazz traditions alive in the schools of New Orleans. As the orchestra’s popularity has grown, it has been invited to perform in communities around the world. One of its most memorable concerts during the past 10 years took place in 2014 at South Africa’s Standard Bank of Joy event, a three-day-long music festival featuring some of the best upcoming and established jazz musicians in the world.
