Gary Barten presents a concert of five original compositions at Paradiso on March 23. He calls these new works scored for one performer ‘sound paintings.’
Barten is a versatile musician who studied classical piano and lap steel guitar and plays a number of other instruments. Among them are the synthesizer, dulcimer, mandolin and percussion.
“I decided to stick with hardware and avoid computers and DAW (digital audio workstation) software hoping to develop a way to perform extended pieces as a soloist using my array of instruments,” he says. “Varied tempos and timbres utilizing sequencers, loops and effects, in addition to the synthesizers and stringed instruments, create instrumental soundtracks for your ears and imagination.”
Barten is presented as part of the Earwaves No Compromise! Series. This new series of concerts features primarily New Mexico-based composers and performers of electronic, contemporary classical, new jazz and experimental music.
