The Oasis Theatre Company presents David Carter’s new translation of “The Miser” by Molière from March 21 through April 7.
Directed by Brenda Lynn Bynum, the production is a classic comedy about a miserly rich widower named Harpagon who attempts to arrange a marry between himself and a young lady in love with his son Cléante.
Harpagon is also a very controlling father who wants his daughter Elise to marry a wealthy man of his choosing. Elise, however, is in love with Valère, who has taken a job as a steward in Harpagon’s household so he can be close to Elise.
Among the cast members are James Jenner as Harpagon, Mark Westberg as Cléante, Joey Beth Gilbert as Elise and David Carter as Valère.
“The Miser” was first performed in 1668 in Paris. Shortly after its premiere, a number of versions of the play appeared on other European stages. “The Miser”has been made into an opera and a Bollywood musical.
