Dwight Loop’s No Compromise! 2019 series continues with a presentation of Gamelan Encantada on April 14 at Paradiso.
A percussion ensemble based in Albuquerque, Gamelan Encantada has musical roots in the gong and metallophone orchestras of Southeast Asia. The ensemble presents traditional Javanese music. It also commissions and performs contemporary and experimental music, with a focus on works by New Mexican composers.
The April 14 concert features compositions by Albuquerque composers Daniel Davis and Bob Kasenchak. Also on the program are a selection of pieces from the Javanese wayang (shadow puppet theater).
Gamelan Encantada has performed in many Albuquerque area celebrations, including the Festival of Asian Cultures at the Albuquerque Civic Plaza and the Globalquerque World Music Festival. In 2011, group members celebrated their 20th anniversary with the release of their CD “Oasis in the Desert: New Music from New Mexico.”
